We have based our school’s sex education policy on the DfE guidance document Relationship Education Guidance and Sex (ref DfE 0116/2000). Sex education is part of the personal, social and health education curriculum in our school.
PSHE LONG TERM PLAN( inc I Belong !)
PSHE/RSE Progression Document
Intent
The National Curriculum advises schools to make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice. At Hutton Henry C of E Primary School, PSHE is considered across the curriculum and is a fundamental part of the children’s school experience. Personal, Social, Health Education is also taught explicitly as part of the whole-school approach. We believe that successful PSHE supports children’s learning capacity and this aspect of the school’s work is held in high regard as we believe that it promotes wellbeing and underpins children’s development as people through this planned programme.
We aim to ensure that all children:
• Develop confidence and responsibility and to make the most of their abilities
• Prepare to play an active role as citizens in Britain
• Develop a healthy, safer lifestyle
• Develop good relationships and to understand and celebrate the differences between people.
Implementation
We recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides pupils with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures. PSHE has a contribution to make to the child’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and opportunities for this will be planned in each topic area of the curriculum. At Hutton Henry Church of England Primary School, we aim to build on and compliment the learning that has already started at home, in relation to moral values and attitudes, awareness of society within the Christian ethos of a Church of England Primary School. Parents or adults who care for the children we teach are the ‘first time educators’ of their children, school works in partnership with them, in developing children personally, emotionally and as young citizens.
At Hutton Henry we believe that the personal, social and health development of each child, in conjunction with their citizenship skills, has a significant role in their ability to learn. We value the importance of PSHE, Citizenship and Relationships and Sex Education in preparing children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. In addition, we believe that a child needs to learn about the many emotional aspects of life and how to manage their own emotions. At Hutton Henry we aim to help the children to develop a personal identity and high levels of motivation. To develop positive social interaction, the skills to live and work with others, to develop the knowledge and skills to become an active citizen. To develop an understanding of our Christian Values. Over time, staff compile floor books to gather evidence of learning.
The Teaching of PSHE is the ‘real-life’ learning, taught within the context of every day happenings in school and as part of the formal curriculum. We are an equality focused school and follow our ” I Belong” programme to explore a range of equality issues throughout a a child’s journey through school. . PSHE will be delivered as part of a planned programme of lessons, through assemblies and productions, events and visits, and having visitors into school. The focus of this work will be to enhance the self-esteem of children which is widely acknowledged as being a key factor in the promotion of more positive relationships, learning and behaviour within the classroom and the development of key skills to make informed choices now and in adult life.
“I Belong !”
We believe that everyone at Hutton Henry Church of England Primary School should feel like they belong!
We believe in educating the children to be part of our modern world and follow our “I Belong!” programme, promoting positive relationships, identity, belonging and equality.
Children explore texts throughout their time in school, from early years to year 6, on the themes of equality, positive relationships, identity and belonging. We are actively promoting equality and social inclusion.
